We provide space and support for young writers to tell their stories.

826 New Orleans is one of the only nonprofits in New Orleans dedicated to youth writing. Most organizations dedicated to youth literacy focus solely on reading skill parity. Our approach is holistic and focuses on long-term literacy development. For that, we fill a critical void in our city’s educational landscape.

Our Mission

826 New Orleans cultivates and supports the voices of young writers ages 3-18 through creative collaborations with schools and communities.

Books by Students

  • Colors of a City

Our Young Writer’s Council and students in New Orleans express their views on community safety in their city.

  • Once Upon a Time in New Orleans

Our talented afterschool students have published a book of poetry all about their lives and imagination, written countless stories, and are now ready to present "Once Upon a Time in New Orleans... A collection of folktales and life lessons.”

  • Kaleidoscope: looking at love in all its colors, shapes, and sizes

In partnership with Tulane University’s creative writing department, Livingston students have created a deeply personal book, Kaleidoscope: looking at love in all its colors, shapes and sizes. Youth writers have contemplated the ways in which they can develop a healthy practice of love.
