What brought you to 826 New Orleans? I was looking for a poetry/writing/arts organization to volunteer with when I first moved to New Orleans, and came across then-Big Class as it was launching. What started as volunteering turned into helping with some internal planning, and I later formally joined the Big Class board. Flash forward a little bit, and now I’m on the 826 New Orleans board!
What are you most excited about as a board member? Right now, I’m pretty excited about being able to support this organization and our collective commitment to publishing youth writing during times when we need their voices the most. I’m always so impressed and energized by our young people’s creativity, storytelling, and leadership - whether that be through workshops, classroom partnerships, or Pizza Poetry. :)
What was your favorite book as a kid, and why? I was told that I learned to “read” The Gingerbread Man fairly young...turns out I was actually just good at “memorizing.” Otherwise I fell into various fiction, and one book that I thought a lot about after reading as a younger person in school was The Giver.
What are you up to outside of your work with us? I’m a consultant to various non-profits and education organizations in New Orleans. I help each in the areas of Data, Decision, and Design. I also help coach QueerFitNola, a free, LGBTQ+ fitness community for everybody and every body.
If you were a ghost for a day, where would you most like to haunt? Just a day?! Well first, I’d pick that day to be Mardi Gras, and second, I’d choose all of New Orleans so I could float by everyone’s celebrations!
